What Happens During a Lactation Consultation?
  • Discussing your short-term and long-term breastfeeding goals
  • Taking a prenatal, birth, and feeding history
  • Weigh the baby before and after feed to gauge milk intake
  • Check baby for any oral restrictions (such as tongue tie or lip tie)
  • A feeding assessment, where the consultant carefully and critically observes the baby's feeding cues, behaviors, and response to the feeding, as well as the ability to transfer milk – a complex, integrated activity
  • Work with mother and baby to achieve a comfortable and sustainable latch
  • Documenting the findings and composing a summary of the plan agreed upon by the mother and the consultant, which includes any referrals to other care providers and support services
  • Help with setting up and using a breast pump properly, including sizing mom for correct flange size if necessary
  • Carefully answering any lingering questions the parents may have
  • Creating a care plan document together with a written copy given to the mother and confirming any follow-up arrangements
  • Screening and talking about parent's mental health and the adjustment to the new role of parenthood (or expanding the family)
  • Writing a summary and communication with pertinent health care providers if necessary
  • Helping families feel more secure and confident in managing needs with practical tools and non-judgmental, empathetic support

Fee Structure

Home Visits:
Initial visit: $200
Follow-up visits: $175
+ $50 for holiday/weekend schedule
+$50 for driving further than 20 miles from Asheville

Follow-up: $125

Prenatal Consultation:
Most people can expect to have breastfeeding go just fine, without needing the expertise of a lactation consultant. During a prenatal breastfeeding consultation, we discuss your goals and expectations of breastfeeding, your feelings and develop a plan for how to address any specific concerns or challenges you may face. We also discuss some tips, tricks, and strategies for getting breastfeeding off to a strong start. Think of this like a private breastfeeding class.

Payment is due at the time of service

Lunabelle Lactation partners with The Lactation Network to bill insurance plans directly. Your  lactation  visit  can be  pre-approved  for  Blue Cross PPO, Blue Shield PPO, Anthem PPO,  Cigna PPO  and several other  health  insurance  plans.  Pre-approved  visits  are  covered  at  100%  with no cost to you, and TLN  will bill your insurance  plan  directly.  Visit  TLN to request  pre-approval. Many families receive multiple visits at no out-of-pocket cost. Insured by Cigna? No problem! Lunabelle partners with Wildflower Lactation for seamless third-party billing for Cigna patients. Confirm coverage with Lunabelle though Wildflower Lactation/.Cigna here: portal.wildflowerhealth.net/affiliate-care/ba8f9d0

If coverage from your insurer is not approved through TLN or Wildflower Lactation, you can contact your plan directly to find out what coverage you are entitled to. Most health insurance  plans cover lactation services as well as supplies. Upon request, you will receive a super bill receipt at your lactation visit that you can file directly for reimbursement.
